Priv staff travel: debunked

I’ll be covering the most common type of priv facility here – that being the one powered by the Rail Staff Leisure Card, for the vast majority of non-safeguarded TOC employees.

There are few railway perks more misunderstood than those provided through Rail Staff Travel – and no part of it is more myth-ridden than the famous ‘priv’. Depending on who you ask, priv either means free trains everywhere or barely any benefit at all. Social media and general railway pub chat only add to the confusion.

The reality is far more interesting – and far more useful – than either extreme. This guide explains what priv actually is, what it covers, what it doesn’t, and how to get the most from it for those who are lucky enough to benefit, all based on how the system really works today.

Rail Staff Travel vs priv – what’s the difference?

Rail Staff Travel (RST) is the umbrella system that governs leisure travel benefits for railway employees and employees of other eligible transport undertakings, partners, and eligible dependants. It includes a wide range of schemes, products, and international agreements. It’s managed by Rail Staff Travel Limited (RSTL), a part of the Rail Delivery Group (RDG).

Priv is one specific part of RST – the scheme that provides 75% discounted leisure travel on most National Rail services, plus selected other transport operators. This distinction matters, because many of the benefits people assume are ‘priv’ are actually covered by entirely separate schemes, like FIP, or TOC-specific free travel schemes.

What priv actually covers

What priv does cover

Priv provides 75% off most National Rail leisure fares, including:

  • Anytime tickets
  • Off-Peak tickets
  • Most other walk-up flexible fares

It does not apply to Advance tickets, and it is strictly for leisure travel, not commuting, unless the relevant authorisation has been sought to purchase a season ticket at reduced rate.

Priv also covers discounted travel on:

  • Caledonian Sleeper and Night Riviera
  • Some ex-Sealink UK ferry routes
  • Many heritage railways

What priv doesn’t cover

Many of the benefits commonly associated with “priv” are actually provided by other Rail Staff Travel schemes, including:

  • Eurostar (via the FIP international scheme)
  • Discounted European rail travel (via the FIP international scheme)
  • Free European rail travel (via the FIP international scheme)
  • International ferry operators (e.g. Stena Line, Irish Ferries)
  • Some cruise operators

These benefits:

  • Have separate rules
  • Often require additional passes or coupons
  • Are sometimes quota-controlled

The biggest priv myths – debunked

Myth 1: “Rail staff travel for free everywhere”

Most UK leisure travel is 75% discounted, not free. Free leisure travel usually applies only on your own operator and a small number of partner networks.

Myth 2: “You can jump on any train at any time”

Priv travel still follows:

  • Off-peak restrictions
  • Service-specific rules
  • Capacity constraints

Some operators impose bans on specific services or time restrictions.

Myth 3: “You’re guaranteed a seat”

Priv tickets do not provide priority boarding. On busy services, standing is a requirement for beneficiaries where full-fare paying customers are standing.

Myth 4: “It’s basically free holidays”

Priv massively reduces travel costs, but accommodation, food, supplements, and reservations still add up – especially internationally. Have a look at some of my journeys to get an idea of where all the money goes.

How priv works in practice

Priv tickets:

  • Are purchased via:
    • Ticket offices
    • Rail Staff Travel Online
  • Retain:
    • Break of journey rights
    • Route flexibility

This makes them far more flexible than Advance tickets, which is one of their biggest hidden advantages.

Caledonian Sleeper – one of priv’s best perks

Sleeper services are fully included within priv. You can either:

  1. Buy a priv-rate inclusive sleeper fare (travel + berth), or
  2. Buy a priv-rate rail ticket and pay the berth supplement

In practice, the inclusive sleeper fare is much cheaper. I’ve seen London Euston – Fort William fares as low as £66.25 using this approach.

This makes overnight rail travel one of the best-value uses of priv, often working out cheaper than:

  • Daytime rail travel
  • Plus a hotel night

Heritage railways

Many UK heritage railways offer either:

  • Free travel
  • 50% / 75% discounts
  • Flat fare offers

Examples include:

  • Severn Valley Railway
  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway
  • West Somerset Railway
  • Bluebell Railway
  • Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

In some ways, this basically creates a national railway attraction pass, ideal for leisure days out, including with the family a lot of the time.

Rover & ranger tickets become insanely cheap

Because rover products are public fares, priv discounts apply.

This means:

  • All Line Rovers
  • Regional rangers
  • Multi-day rovers

…become ridiculously good value, allowing intensive rail exploration at very low cost. The vast majority (if not all) of rover and ranger products that can be Railcard discounted can also be priv discounted. Double-check with a booking office if you are unsure.

The real downsides of priv

Priv is a supr powerful benefit but it isn’t frictionless. The drawbacks tend to be practical rather than financial, obviously.

  • You can’t buy priv tickets from ticket machines
Priv tickets must be bought online or at ticket offices, which can be inconvenient at unstaffed stations or when rushing to catch a train.
  • No real bargains compared with Advance tickets
Because priv applies to flexible fares, it doesn’t unlock the ultra-cheap deals that Advance tickets sometimes offer.
In fact, there are occasional situations where a full-fare Advance is cheaper than a priv-discounted flexible ticket, particularly during peak periods or on heavily price-managed routes.
  • You still need to carry a physical Rail Staff Leisure Card
There’s currently no digital version, so you must carry the physical card to verify your entitlement. Forget it, and your priv ticket becomes invalid – which can be awkward and expensive.

These aren’t deal-breakers, but they’re inconveniences, we must admit, that shape how and when priv is most useful.

Final thoughts

Priv is not:

  • Unlimited free travel
  • A golden ticket
  • A magic holiday generator

But it is one of the most powerful but misunderstood travel benefits in the UK.

Used well, it unlocks affordable short- and long-distance rail, sleeper travel, heritage exploration and railway, but also ferry and hovercraft discovery.
